They will raze 2,500 hectares of this Indonesian rainforest

Medco, an Indonesian oil and gas company, has launched a "renewable energy" project to build a biomass power plant and create a wood plantation in Papua province, Indonesia. How do they plan to take this project further? Well, by bulldozing rainforest.

They said they will clear 2,500 hectares of land to meet the demands of the plant, and justified it by saying it will help the country to reduce its emissions and phase out fossil fuels.
Yes, sure, Indonesia is still highly reliant on fossil fuels for its energy production, so developing a power plant that is neither oil nor gas is great. But cutting down an old-growth primary and carbon-storing forest in order to do it? Well, I am not so sure that it is the way to go.
Indonesia’s rapid deforestation in recent decades has made the country a leading contributor to climate change. I would, therefore, say that forests should be protected, not erased from the map...
Indonesian think tank Trend Asia has warned that Indonesia's plan to ramp up biomass production could result in the clearance of more than 1 million hectares of tropical forest in the coming years.
Yes, we need more renewables. No, this can't be done at the expense of forests and biodiversity.

@elizbeth_gathigia I agree, destroying forests in order to decarbonize a society isn't the way to go!

This massive deforestation is uncalled for. The green funds given to Indonesia should not be used to destroy the environment.
