Extreme Heat in U.S. Farmlands Causes Mass Deaths of Young Birds
Baby birds, especially those fledged in unshaded nests, are particularly vulnerable to dehydration and the effects of excessive heat

10/09/2024 – A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, has revealed that millions of young birds are dying due to extreme heat in agricultural areas across the United States. This situation represents a growing threat from climate change to bird populations across the country.

Baby birds, especially those fledged in unshaded nests, are particularly vulnerable to dehydration and the effects of excessive heat. High temperatures affect not only the chicks, but also the ability of adults to find food and sustain nests during periods of extreme heat.
