Nokia’s Commitment to Sustainable Mobile Networks and Energy Efficiency

Nokia is making significant strides toward building zero-emission mobile networks, focusing on sustainability throughout the product life cycle. Recognizing that nearly all CO2 emissions associated with radio network products are generated during the use stage, Nokia innovates to minimize electricity consumption and reduce the cost of used electricity. This commitment extends beyond the use phase, as Nokia also works to reduce emissions during manufacturing, transportation, and end-of-life stages. These measures collectively lower the overall carbon footprint and demonstrate Nokia's dedication to environmentally friendly practices across all phases of its product life cycle.

A key component of Nokia’s sustainability efforts is decarbonizing energy sources, an essential step toward global net-zero goals. In regions like Finland, Nokia’s mobile networks are already achieving zero carbon emissions by operating on entirely carbon-neutral grid power. This achievement underlines Nokia's goal to utilize clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels wherever possible, further underscoring their commitment to the climate. The company is determined to lead by example, pushing for renewable energy use in all of its operations and continuously improving its product designs to meet the demands of a sustainable future.

In addition to cleaner energy sources, Nokia has developed several industry-leading solutions to maximize energy efficiency, especially within radio networks. For example, the Nokia AirScale portfolio includes advanced base stations and radio units optimized to conserve power across varying traffic conditions. These stations implement innovations such as Extreme Deep Sleep and Zero Traffic, Zero Energy modes, significantly lowering energy consumption during low-traffic times. By constantly refining these features, Nokia ensures that their products are both cost-effective and energy-efficient, helping mobile operators manage growing energy costs.

Nokia’s efforts to minimize its environmental footprint extend to the end-of-life stage of its products. The company promotes the use of recycled materials in production, increases the percentage of carbon-neutral fuels for transportation, and encourages product take-back programs. Furthermore, Nokia is actively expanding its line of refurbished products, allowing for continued use and reduced waste. These initiatives not only enhance sustainability but also help minimize landfill contributions, aligning Nokia with circular economy principles and reducing the overall demand for new materials.

Finally, Nokia is exploring innovative technologies like the Virtual Power Plant Controller and the Nokia MantaRay Energy Solution to further drive energy efficiency. These solutions use AI and machine learning to optimize power usage, integrate renewable energy, and even allow mobile operators to sell energy back to the grid, enhancing grid reliability while lowering CO2 emissions. With unique approaches such as liquid cooling for baseband hotels and efficient microwave transport solutions, Nokia showcases a comprehensive strategy that integrates technological innovation with environmental responsibility, paving the way toward a greener future for mobile networks.
