Climate warning

Donald Trump warns the EU: Boost your purchases of U.S. oil and gas, or be prepared to face tariffs.

The president-elect, Donald Trump, has issued a warning to the EU, stating that trade tariffs will be imposed on its exports to the U.S. unless member states significantly increase their purchases of American oil and gas. This statement has reignited concerns about a potential trade war, especially as the U.S. has become a major supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe following the decline of Russian gas supplies.

While the EU may find it in its best interest to diversify energy imports away from Russia, the implications of Trump's demands are going to have more detrimental impacts on the environment. The potential for increased oil and gas exports will lead to spikes in carbon emissions.

This is alarming. Forcing increased oil and gas imports undermines global climate goals and prioritizes short-term trade interests over the urgent need for sustainable energy transitions.

DJT coming out to strongly coerce the EU to purchase US oil and gas is completely inn bad taste. The world is shifting away from these fossil fuels and we cannot have threats being used against those who are progressive towards cleaner fuels

@Kevin Using coercion to push fossil fuel sales contradicts the global shift to cleaner energy, undermining progress and collaboration in addressing climate change. This approach sets a concerning precedent.

The issue underscores the complexity of balancing energy security, trade relations, and climate action.

@kelvin_thuranira_kaberia Exactly. Striking the right balance between energy security, international trade, and the urgent need for climate action is a critical challenge that requires thoughtful, cooperative solutions, not coercive tactics.

Trump was the worst idea. I do hope that one day he changes and help us transit towards green energy.

@jane_wangui Change is always possible, and it would be impactful if influential figures like Trump embraced and supported the transition to green energy for a sustainable future.

@rosebellendiritu Absolutely, this is sad. It's unfortunate that Trump is thinking only of wealth and profits, and not of what is at stake for the environment and for future generations.

Fossil fuel ultimatums are a climate death sentence. I wish and i could urge the EU to reject Trump’s demands and invest in clean energy. Our planet can’t afford more carbon bombs.

The demand also risks escalating a trade conflict with the EU, which has been reducing reliance on Russian energy.
