(Re)starting up coal power plants – have you heard about climate change???

2024, a new year, new resolutions? Well, well, well, not for EDF, the French electric utility company owned by the French state. Why that? Oh, simply because they decided to start up again the Saint-Avold, Moselle coal power plant and the Cordemais coal-fired power plant to generate electricity on January 10-11. "Start up again", yes because these coal-fired power plants are supposed to be shut down, since 2022 for the one in Saint-Avold.
What's the point of creating a transition plan for these power plants if it is to burn up our planet first? When will EDF (and the French government) start acting instead of talking?
To them: have you heard about climate change??? Are we and our future a joke to you? 🤡

Public pressure, media attention, and advocacy efforts can play a significant role in pushing for stronger climate action and holding decision-makers accountable.

I do not understand this obsession with coal that the French state has while there are other so many clean ways of boosting energy uptake

Disheartening to see EDF restarting coal power plants in 2024, contradicting the supposed shutdown plans. Initiatives like transition plans should prioritize climate action, not exacerbate environmental challenges. Urgent action is needed to align actions with climate goals. The question remains: When will EDF and the French government turn their commitments into impactful measures instead of contributing to the problem? Climate change is a serious concern, and actions should reflect the urgency of the situation. 🌍🔥 #ClimateActionNow #CoalFreeFuture

@rukia_ahmed_abdi This is certainly the height of backwardness as never seen before because nothing can really explain this.

The French state needs to move with speed and shut down these up coming coal plants and never revive them again

Restarting coal power plants despite the known impact on climate is a regressive move.

This is unacceptable, the French government must stop coal mining and this project must be stopped by all means. Restarting such a project is pulling back climate action progress.

Of course we need to increase clean energy It's out of necessity not luxury that this plant is operating during the winter. It's also not a new plant. They want to invest in more biomass versus coal for this operation. Let's get them to also invest in nuclear and RE. So we can permanently ditch these last coal plants.

@jehannes_ros coal mining is harmful , we must all resolve to do away with it and sought to use sustainable and clean energy as you've outlined.

@joseph_githinji yes but it's not restating in the sense they didn't anticipate this for the winter. France uses ineffecient electrical heating still instead of heat pumps.

@Kevin I agree, this only a very small plant for this winter. Germany however has many gw if coal to atleast 2038. This French plant will dissappear naturally imho. France is committed to triple the nuclear energy by 3x in europe/world by 2050.

@jehannes_ros I know that this coal power plant was reopened to help in this cold weather in France, but it is not a sustainable solution nor a viable one. Investments need to be made now in renewables, (heating and energy) infrastructures need to be improved. Relying on coal (even as a last resort) gives the wrong incentives

@marine_stephan Agree, yet not RE, it needs to say sustainables to not exclude other sources or methods pre-emptiable. And with a direct connected grid of more then 400 Million connections`, we can lower the level of it's co2 output. ETS also pushes out coal and gas.
