Heavy industry is often seen as one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. But mining giant Fortescue is proving that switching to electric isn’t just possible—it’s already making economic sense.
At its massive iron ore mines, Fortescue has begun deploying Liebherr’s T264 battery-electric haul trucks. These giants stand taller than a double-storey house, weigh 176 tonnes, and can carry a staggering 240 tonnes of ore—all without burning a drop of diesel.
💡 A Smart Business Move
By replacing fossil-fueled trucks with battery-powered ones, Fortescue is already saving between $300-400 million per year in avoided fuel costs alone. That’s not just good for the climate—it’s a financial no-brainer.
🔋 Next-Level Charging Technology
These electric haulers are powered by a 3.2 MWh battery, charged in just 30 minutes by a 6 MW ultra-fast charger—the world’s most powerful EV charger, currently under development by Fortescue.
🚜 Autonomy + Zero Emissions
Not only are these trucks emissions-free, but they also drive autonomously, increasing safety and efficiency on-site.
🚀 A $4 Billion Commitment to “Real Zero”
Fortescue has placed an order for 360 electric haul trucks in a $4 billion deal with Liebherr. Unlike many corporations that rely on carbon credits and offsets to claim “net zero,” Fortescue is committing to real zero emissions across its Australian iron ore operations by 2030.
And this is just the beginning. The battery-electric power systems for these trucks are being developed by Fortescue Zero in the UK, a contract worth over $1 billion—not just for Fortescue’s fleet, but for third parties looking to electrify as well.
🌍 A Game-Changer for Mining and Beyond
Fuel and energy costs are the largest operating expenses for Fortescue—and its biggest source of emissions. By going electric, it’s tackling both challenges at once.
This isn’t the future of mining—it’s happening right now. And the message is clear: electrification isn’t just good for the planet—it’s great for business.
Great job Forescue!

@tabitha_kimani Who said mining can’t go green?
