Scrapping climate targets to make billions on death and destruction
As climate change-infused hurricanes continue to rage havoc, claiming lives and causing billion-dollar destruction, the oil giant BP has abandoned its target to cut oil and gas output by 2030.
According to Reuters, referring to three different sources, BP is now targeting several new investments in the Middle East and the Gulf of Mexico to boost its oil and gas output.
When unveiled in 2020, BP's strategy was the sector's most ambitious with a pledge to cut output by 40% while rapidly growing renewables by 2030. Not anymore. As the company’s profits are soaring, its climate targets are shrinking.
It's disgraceful, it's shameful, and it's putting us all at risk.
This is a huge shame to British Petroleum.Halting their climate targets while being industry leaders in pollution is preposterous.

The pursuit of short-term profits can lead to decisions that exacerbate environmental destruction, such as increased extraction of fossil fuels, deforestation, and pollution, ultimately contributing to climate change and biodiversity loss.

It is important to hold corporations and governments accountable for their actions and ensure that climate targets are not sacrificed for profit. This behavior undermines global efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and must be addressed through greater transparency and regulation.

BP’s decision to abandon its 2030 climate targets in favour of boosting oil and gas output is a disheartening step backward in the global fight against climate change. This move prioritizes profit over the urgent need to address environmental destruction, putting communities and ecosystems at greater risk.

It's disappointing to see a major energy player like BP backtrack on its climate commitments, especially as the world grapples with the urgent need to address climate change and transition towards renewable energy sources.
