On International Day of Biological Diversity, it's both sad and considering that the world's wildlife is disappearing. The populations of vertebrate species have dropped by more than half in just over 40 years. According to the Living Planet Index, which tracks trends in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, there has been a 58 percent decline between 1970 and 2012 and the trend continues until today.
The main threats to these populations are habitat loss and degradation often caused by converting natural areas into farmland and overexploitation such as unsustainable fishing. Terrestrial species (those living on land) have seen a 38 percent decline largely because humans have modified much of their lands. Freshwater species have suffered the most with an 81 percent drop due to habitat loss from dams and unsustainable water use. Marine species (those living in the ocean) have declined by 36 percent due to overfishing.
This International Day of Biological Diversity, let's commit to protecting our planet's diversity of life. Every action counts in reversing these alarming trends and ensuring a healthier planet for future generations. 🌿
