Emissions from Tata Steel's Dutch Plant reduce life expectancy.
The Dutch public health institute RIVM has released a report linking emissions from the Tata Steel plant in IJmuiden to adverse health effects on local residents. Notable findings from the report include:
Residents of Wijk aan Zee, near the plant, experience issues like smell, dust, and noise nuisances, leading to a 2.5-month reduction in their life expectancy.
Exposure to fine particulate pollution from the plant increases the risk of lung cancer, contributing to approximately 4% of new cases annually.
Exposure to nitrogen dioxide from the plant increases the risk of asthma development, accounting for around 3% of new cases in children.
The RIVM calculated the extent of Tata Steel emissions in the environment and assessed their impact on the health of local residents. The effects are most severe for those living closest to the plant, with a diminishing impact as distance from the site increases.
