Environmental monitoring and marine pollution control will be ramped up as China’s revised Maritime Environment Protection Law is about to be implemented. Liu Haitao, an official with the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress, the country’s top legislature, said on Saturday that the amended law has required the coast guard authorities and governments above county level in coastal regions to strengthen the comprehensive, coordinated and regular environmental monitoring of the ocean. While calling for the country to intensify control over marine environment quality, the law, which will take effect on Jan 1, also states that the management of marine discharge permits must also be strengthened, he said. Liu works for the NPC Standing Committee’s Legislative Affairs Commission. A series of systems related to monitoring, such as those on information sharing, early warning, environmental assessment and emergency response, are ordered to be established and improved in line with the law, he said. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2023/12/china-to-ramp-up-marine-pollution-control-efforts-china-daily/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=china-to-ramp-up-marine-pollution-control-efforts-china-daily

China's commitment to ramping up efforts on marine pollution control, as outlined in the revised Maritime Environment Protection Law, reflects a positive step in the fight against climate change. The amended law, set to take effect on January 1, emphasizes the need for strengthened environmental monitoring of the ocean, particularly by coast guard authorities and governments in coastal regions. The focus on comprehensive, coordinated, and regular monitoring, along with the strengthening of marine discharge permit management, underscores the importance of regulating and mitigating the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems. The establishment and improvement of systems related to monitoring, information sharing, early warning, environmental assessment, and emergency response align with the broader global effort to protect and preserve marine environments.
