Electrochemical Device Captures Carbon Dioxide at the Flick of a Switch

Engineers at Rice University have created new technology that could reduce the cost of absorbing carbon dioxide from all kinds of emissions, potentially changing the game for both sectors trying to meet changing greenhouse gas rules and the emerging energy-transition economy.
A device developed by chemical and biomolecular engineer Haotian Wang can directly remove carbon dioxide from sources including flue gas and the atmosphere by utilizing electricity to trigger an electrochemical process based on water and oxygen, according to a study that was published in Nature. There are now just 18 facilities in operation worldwide, but this technological achievement could make direct air capture from the periphery of industry a promising avenue for combating climate change.
