Successful campaign to impose vegetarian menu choice for school meals

The overproduction and overconsumption of meat has serious environmental and health consequences as one of the main drivers of climate change and deforestation. In addition, the current level of meat consumption in France is a factor worsening the risk of developing diseases (obesity, diabetes or even certain types of cancer). In 2017 Greenpeace France decided to tackle these issues more specifically in school restaurants, which serve nearly one billion meals per year to more than seven million children. At the time, nearly seven out of ten children ate meat or fish with every meal served in the school restaurants and the meat was then served in proportions that were twice too large. Greenpeace France launched a campaign approaching political leaders, collective catering professionals, organizations such as the Vegetarian Association of France (AVF) and parents unions to help improve the offer offered in school restaurants. The Egalim law, adopted by the French National Assembly on October 2, 2018 was the first result of this intense lobbying. It set up the experimentation of a weekly vegetarian menu in all French school restaurants for a period of two years. But this law did not firmly and definitively introduce the weekly vegetarian menu. To make this measure compulsory, Greenpeace France then campaigned at a local level to convince the local communities and decision-makers on the menus served in the school, to go even further by offering a daily vegetarian option or more vegetarian menus every week. To make a long story short, the experimentation of the vegetarian menu was finally made permanent, and a vegetarian option will be made compulsory in all institutions managed by the State in 2023. Another victory obtained is a proposal from Greenpeace and other associations on the evolution of all professional cooking training which will have to include modules on the preparation of vegetarian dishes. https://www.greenpeace.fr/cantines-et-menus-vegetariens-objectif-atteint/
