Sir David Attenborough setting a hopeful tone for COP26

Sir David Attenborough, a world famous environmentalist, broadcaster, and documentarian made some powerful opening remarks to kick off the first day of talks at COP26. Speaking directly after UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Prince Charles, Sir David spoke of the immediacy of the climate crisis, as it was no longer the problem for a future generation, but a crisis that was already affecting all of us today. "Those who have done the least to cause this problem are being the hardest hit" - One of the many sobering statements made by the environmentalist, and his speech was powerfully accentuated by the interplay of some real world interviews with youths who shared their anxieties about growing up on a climate-compromised planet. But in a very Sir David way, he also remarked on the brilliance of humans as problem solvers while addressing a room filled with world leaders, royalty and environmental organisation figureheads. “If working apart we are a force powerful enough to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it”. It's truly fantastic to see such an icon of media and a champion of the environment leading the charge, as it helps to connect a wider audience of these environmental issues with a familiar face and a celebrity who has dedicated much of his life to raising the public awareness of the devastating consequences of climate change. Focusing on Scott Morrison pretending to look interested was a waste of time. The man in charge of a government constantly approving new coal and gas projects has no interest in stopping that. His appearance at COP26 is purely a PR exercise and a I hope that countries decide to not back Australian coal and gas exports to force him to reconsider his parties current climate destroying strategies.
