Having the best lawn in the neighborhood is like having a crown in the American suburbs. But what goes into a lawn like that oftentimes isn't good for the environment. . Fertilizer aside (which in large quantities, is also incredibly bad), lawns are chocked full of chemicals. Treatments meant to keep weeds and pests at bay can be safe at small quantities, but are oftentimes overused. How overused? To put it in perspective: American homeowners use 10 times more chemical pesticides per acre on their lawns than are used on U.S. farmlands! This extreme dousing only means that runoff becomes even more toxic, affecting wildlife downstream, but also areas downwind and groundwater below the surface. . .
