More than 420 neighbourhood batteries approved to boost rooftop solar and storage capacity

The Australian government, alongside Arena, has approved over 420 community or "neighbourhood" batteries as part of efforts to enhance local networks' ability to accommodate the growing adoption of rooftop solar. This initiative, funded with $143 million from Arena, aims to install batteries across all states and territories, with New South Wales receiving the largest share. Batteries, ranging from 50 kW to 5 MW, will be funded both by networks and non-network entities, including community groups. Arena expects these installations to total approximately 280 MWh, significantly boosting rooftop solar capacity, reducing emissions, and cutting electricity costs. According to Arena CEO Darren Miller, these batteries will alleviate local network constraints and enhance energy security, benefiting various sectors from households to community facilities. Federal Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the potential to expand battery storage, noting widespread adoption of rooftop solar but limited uptake of battery storage among households.
