BIDEN ADMINISTRATION PUTS $725M TOWARD COAL MINING CLEANUP

The Biden administration is allocating $725 million to 22 states and the Navajo Nation for cleaning up abandoned mines and reducing pollution, as part of the $11.3 billion set aside by the bipartisan infrastructure law. Over $1.4 billion has already been awarded in the past two years. This funding will be used to close dangerous mine shafts, improve water quality, restore water supplies, and stabilize compromised slopes. Additionally, it will support economic redevelopment projects, such as transforming former mine lands for recreational use, manufacturing, or renewable energy. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland emphasized the investments will revitalize local economies and support reclamation jobs, addressing the environmental impacts from legacy coal mining. Deputy Assistant Secretary Steve Feldgus highlighted the unprecedented scale of these cleanup efforts and their positive impact on coal communities .

Coal mining was the biggest mistake the world committed to. We are glad that funds are being allocated to finance the clean up of the mess it left.
