Report of "Peoples' climate vote" has been launched today. This is the largest standalone survey conducted in 77 countries, which has 87% of global population. Interesting outcomes of this YouTube video by UN has been summarized in first 5:14 minutes. The methodologies of survey have been described in next 4:31 minutes of this 27+ minute video. Rest of the session is about intelligent questions and clarifying answers.
Cassy Flyn, Global Director of UNDP informed 80% of people surveyed want their government to strengthen their climate action. This demand for stronger climate action should be a message of significance to the Governments while finalizing NDC 3.0. 86% of people wants to collaborate for climate actions. 50% of interviewees said they think about climate change daily or weekly. 2/3 of people said climate change factors in their decision-making process and many of them are from LDCs (Least Developed Countries-77%) and SIDs (Small Island Developing states-80%). 72% wants their government to move away from fossil fuels, 8 out of 10 wants actions against extreme weather conditions and 4 out of 5 wants nature conservation.
73000+ people have been interviewed over telephone from 77 countries, which represents 87% of global population from citizens with a telephone number. 19 LDCs and 9 counties of SIDs are also interviewed by the survey ream Geopol, which was engaged by UNDP. People were contacted by randomly generated telephone numbers. Randomly generated telephone numbers mean the telephone numbers were selected in such a manner that all the telephone numbers in the directory had equal chances of getting selected and that establishes the representativeness of sample of the 87% of global population. Questions have been asked in 87 local languages for breaking the barriers of languages. 9000 interviewees i.e 10% of interviewed people have never gone to school.
Bringing this collective voice in table when policymakers shall finalize NDC 3 through a survey is a timely action of United Nations., This survey started in 2023 and ended in May, 2024 but its results are expected to be recognized by the global leaders.
I shall also take this opportunity to share my one recent local experience because Rio 92 taught us to think globally but act locally. Although, we were not aware of this UN initiative, yet few days back we were preparing a questionnaire to track the impacts of environmental and climate changes in few sectors here. I was apprehensive of whether people in general can identify the climate factors, which are likely to impact their activities and we were attempting to modify the set of questions couple of times so that we can bring the reality, if any, on paper. Asking the right question matters. We learnt our first lesson when we started the survey in a particular sector where seasonal production takes place. Workers were just not coming to work because of sheer heat even during this is a season of production. At times absence of voice speak louder.
There are also other inhabitants of this planet whose lives are deeply impacted by climate change. Nonhumans are also expressing their distress through different ways and means. Adding the voices of nonhumans in human languages could have altered the scenario.
4 billion of human voters are electing their leaders in 2024. Climate action has not topped the political agenda political parties across the globe till date. The linkage between climate change plus environmental stressors with distress and misery of people are neither well documented nor well communicated on field.
UN survey has fair amount of share of people's voice from different sections of society.
This timely survey report may bring the collective voice for stronger climate action
