The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched Africa’s first vehicle emissions testing project in Kampala, Uganda. The Real Urban Emissions Initiative (TRUE) aims to monitor emissions from around 4,000 vehicles using cutting-edge technology, it will provide critical data for policymakers to address the city's severe air pollution. Kampala, where pollution levels are over five times the WHO’s safe limit, is heavily impacted by vehicle emissions, contributing to serious health risks like heart disease and asthma. The initiative, supported by local and international partners, focuses on measuring real-world emissions from two-wheelers and various other vehicles, assessing pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and black carbon. With nearly 60% of Kampala's nitrogen dioxide emissions coming from vehicles, UNEP stresses the need for stronger regulations on imported used vehicles, which often lack modern safety and environmental standards.
TRUE’s data will aid in raising awareness and driving policy changes to reduce vehicle emissions in Uganda, and experts hope the project will serve as a model for other growing cities in Africa.
