Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched a Ksh. 620 million initiative to restore the Mt. Elgon Forest ecosystem, supported by the Global Environment Facility and local governments. This five-year project aims to combat deforestation and improve local livelihoods through job creation and increased agricultural productivity.

Duale emphasized the importance of Mt. Elgon as a vital water tower and biodiversity hotspot, declaring November 7th as Mt. Elgon Day to promote conservation efforts. He also announced a ban on cultivation in natural forests to protect these ecosystems and warned against illegal activities. The initiative aligns with Kenya's goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, aimed at enhancing climate resilience and empowering communities.

This project represents a significant step toward environmental restoration and community development. By increasing forest cover and creating job opportunities, it addresses both ecological and economic challenges in the region.
