Innovate, collaborate, scale: Inside Amazon’s approach to decarbonising its global network of buildings

Image of post in post detailed view

From fulfilment centres to data centres to grocery stores, Amazon is testing and scaling new tech to push toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Amazon focuses on five key areas when it comes to decarbonising buildings:
1. Prioritising carbon-free energy.
2. Increasing energy efficiency.
3. Using lower carbon refrigerants.
4. Utilising lower carbon construction materials.
5. Reducing onsite water consumption and waste generation.

Improving in each category requires constant innovation and investment in new technology as well as continuous testing and learning in order to help refine their approach, and guide future development. According to the Carbon Leadership Forum, buildings and construction account for 40% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. When it comes to decarbonising buildings, Amazon regroup it's focus on two critical areas:
1. The materials and methods used in construction.
2. The energy consumption and operational impacts throughout a building's lifecycle.
Here's a live example,
In Sacramento, California, Amazon built North America's first International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Zero Carbon Certified logistics facility. This facility, which does not use on-site fossil fuels for operations, not only features lower-carbon concrete but also incorporates energy-efficient conveyor systems. These systems have been optimised with high-efficiency motors, low-friction belts, and low-friction rollers which reduce the energy consumption of the equipment by 38%.

Amazon has started incorporating mass-timber components in their corporate offices, which is a lower-carbon engineered wood product that can replace carbon-intensive materials like steel and concrete.

Amazon has built 36 data centres with 20% lower-carbon concrete, and now requiring that all new data centres have 35% lower embodied carbon. Amazon is also continually working to optimise water consumption by using real-time data to identify leaks, piloting new treatment technologies, and exploring operational changes, such as installing sensors and alerts to track water use and detect anomalies.

@walter_lungayi absolutely, the buildings that we live in might be causes of carbon emissions
