PUMA Among Europe’s Top Climate Leaders

Sports brand PUMA recently earned a top spot in the Financial Times' "Europe’s Climate Leaders" list, ranking eighth among 600 European companies. This acknowledgment celebrates PUMA’s remarkable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with a particular focus on Scope 1 and 2 emissions — direct and purchased energy emissions. PUMA’s achievements reflect the company's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, as the Financial Times also highlighted companies actively measuring and addressing emissions across their supply chains, or Scope 3 emissions, where PUMA has consistently made substantial strides.

PUMA's Chief Sourcing Officer, Anne-Laure Descours, expressed gratitude for the recognition, praising the dedicated teams worldwide who contributed to this accomplishment. She acknowledged the importance of collective action and ongoing improvements in their supply chain, where the majority of PUMA’s emissions are generated. This open acknowledgment of the challenges that lie ahead demonstrates PUMA’s transparent and committed approach to further reducing its carbon footprint in collaboration with stakeholders.

Notably, PUMA’s achievements in 2023 surpassed expectations, reaching its initial climate goals seven years ahead of schedule. Building on this momentum, the company set ambitious new targets approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and reduce Scope 3 emissions by 33% by 2030, from a 2017 baseline. This accelerated progress is part of PUMA’s long-term commitment to meet global climate objectives and set new standards for sustainability in the sportswear industry.

A key factor in PUMA’s emissions reduction success has been the increase in renewable energy usage by its core suppliers, who doubled their renewable energy consumption in 2023. Additionally, PUMA has integrated low-carbon materials into its product lines, adopted low-carbon shipping, and transitioned to electric vehicles within its fleet. By embracing these initiatives, PUMA not only mitigates its own environmental impact but also models a path forward for other companies aiming to balance business growth with responsible, climate-positive practices.
