Bhutan is the world's only carbon-negative country; its forests absorb more CO2 than the country emits. Further, they export hydroelectricity to neighboring India. Bhutan has the highest area of land designated as Protected Areas (26%) and has the highest proportion of forest cover of any Asian country (72%). The safeguarding of Bhutan’s biodiversity is enshrined in its Constitution, which mandates that at least 60% of land remains forested. Instead of using the incomplete and misleading Gross Domestic Product to measure economic health (which encourages ever-increasing resource consumption), Bhutan uses an index called Gross Domestic Happiness, placing importance on the well-being of its citizens, and cultural and environmental conservation.
If other countries had a similar commitment to protecting the environment, there would be no climate crisis or biodiversity crisis!
