🧊 Thousands of ancient viruses have been discovered in a melting Himalayan glacier.
🔹 Scientists from Ohio State University (USA) have discovered about 1,700 ancient viruses hidden in the ice of the Himalayas in western China. Most of them were previously unknown to science.
🔹 According to Nature Geoscience, viral DNA fragments were extracted from an approximately 305-meter-long ice core cut from the melting Gulia Glacier.
🔹 The authors of the scientific paper believe that these viruses have survived at least three major climate changes in the last 41,000 years.
🔹 The researchers concluded that if they are able to survive in permafrost for such a long time, it indicates that viruses can persist in such harsh conditions.
🔹 Scientists have long studied the effects of viruses and other diseases on the human body. For example, researchers have found that people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience metastatic cancer.
