Re-wilding: first baby ecological engineer welcomed on Exmoor, UK
The National Trust has just announced that a European beaver kit has been born this year to a re-introduced pair on its Holnicote Estate, Exmoor, SW England: the first for 400 years:

The native British beaver population was hunted to extinction centuries ago for its fur and oil. Research by Exeter University has shown that re-introduced beavers can make a huge positive impact on biodiversity, water quality and flood prevention in the ecologically degraded landscapes of the British Isles. After heavy rain from intense Atlantic storms, the steep hills of Exmoor gave rise to some of the worst flash floods in British history. Hopefully, the more storm runoff that is trapped by beaver dams along small headwater streams, the less the downstream havoc.
