Refreezing the Arctic

Over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest parts of the ice in the Arctic have shrunk by 95%. A worrying fact, especially as ice is crucial for reflecting heat into the atmosphere, and its melting contributes to sea level rise...
It is with this in mind that the UK startup Real Ice has decided to restore the Arctic ice, by refreezing parts of it and increasing its thickness. How? you might ask. Well, with a quite interesting solution.
Real Ice sends underwater drones that bore holes in the ice from underneath so that water can be pulled up through them. The water is then sprayed on top, removing the layer of snow, which prevents the ice from expanding during the winter, thus allowing the ice to grow thicker.
This is quite an interesting solution that should definitely be deployed while we reduce our carbon emissions and prevent the ice from melting in the first place.

Good progress but we must think sustainable actions to ensuring it remains that way

Real Ice, a UK startup, aims to address Arctic ice loss by employing a unique solution. Recognizing the significant reduction (95%) in the oldest and thickest Arctic ice over the past 30 years, Real Ice utilizes underwater drones to bore holes in the ice from beneath. This process allows water to be pulled up, which is then sprayed on top, removing the snow layer hindering ice expansion during winter.

This is a good short term solution but going forward we must purpose to reduce Carbon footprint and create a net zero environment.

@joseph_githinji I agree, this should only be a solution that needs to be combined with a reduction in GHG emissions

The true solution lies in transitioning to a carbon-neutral world and protecting the Arctic as a whole.

@george_kariuki I totally agree. Refreezing isn't enough and shouldn't be used as an excuse to continue emitting GHG
