Kenya's state-owned electricity company, KenGen, has announced plans to install a 42.5 megawatt solar power plant near its hydroelectric dams along the Seven Forks region. The project, undertaken in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), aims to expand Kenya's renewable energy capacity over the next two years and four months.
The additional solar power generation is expected to supplement the existing hydroelectric supply, particularly during periods of drought, and provide more affordable and reliable electricity to Kenyan consumers. The government has highlighted the project's potential to create jobs, foster community engagement, and contribute to Kenya's transition towards a 100% green energy mix.
The partnership between Kenya and France in the energy sector reflects their longstanding cordial relations and shared commitment to addressing climate change through renewable energy deployment. As Kenya continues to diversify its energy sources, this solar power project represents a significant step towards enhancing the country's energy security and sustainability.
