Burkina Faso's military leaders have recently signed an agreement with Russia to construct a nuclear power plant in order to address the country's electricity shortage. This move comes after the junta's strained relations with Western partners. Since seizing power last year, Burkina Faso has turned to Russia for both economic and military support. Currently, only 21% of the population has access to electricity, making Burkina Faso one of the least electrified countries worldwide. The deal with Russia, which was initiated during talks between Burkinabe military ruler Capt Ibrahim Traore and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, aims to meet the energy demands of Burkina Faso and its neighboring countries. Burkina Faso's target is to achieve 95% electricity access for urban areas and 50% for rural areas by 2030. Currently, the country heavily relies on biofuels like charcoal and wood, with oil products accounting for one-third of its energy supply.

The decision to build a nuclear power plant in Burkina Faso is complex, as it has both benefits and potential environmental risks. Countries must carefully consider the balance between energy needs and environmental sustainability for economic development.
