Amazon ‘threatens to fire’ Employees (Climate)

Amazon ‘threatens to fire’ employees for campaigning against climate change. Staff say they were told they were breaching company policies by calling for their employer to reduce emissions ‘This is not the time to shoot the messengers,’ said employee Maren Costa. ‘This is not the time to silence those who are speaking out’ ‘This is not the time to shoot the messengers,’ said employee Maren Costa. ‘This is not the time to silence those who are speaking out’. Amazon has threatened to fire at least two employees after they spoke out about environmental damage being caused by the company, a collective of its workers has claimed. The e-commerce giant told Maren Costa and Jamie Kowalski that they were breaking staff rules by making public comments relating to the firm. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/amazon-employees-climate-change-campaign-jeff-bezos-staff-workers-a9269031.html?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1578058302

This reminds me of Elizabeth Holmes when she was CEO of Theranos.

This issue is systemic. Amazon won’t change unless there is economic incentive to do it. That incentive can come from different sources either from the Amazon users or from the government. Still is great to see employees standing up to the truth

that's right, but management should be given the opportunity to react first. often they know nothing about certain inconsistencies. if there is no immediate reaction then outside institutions must be involved! but, in any case, they should be promoted and not fired!

As a sort of “climate strike action” we should designate Fridays as a day nobody orders anything from Amazon - maybe Mr Bezos would take note then? A bit like the car-free Sundays that some countries tried in the ‘80s to curb CO2 emissions...

Whistleblowers need to be supported not persecuted. We need to unite on the side of our only planet.

New Year's resolutions: rediscover your local traders and support them if they still exist. Could also help the climate - at least the social one.
