Florida's Dangerous Message: Governor DeSantis Proposes Limiting ESG Criteria

The recent proposal by Governor DeSantis to bar the use of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria in Florida municipal bond sales is outrageous and unacceptable. This action sends a clear message that short-term profits are held in higher regard than the long-term health of our planet.
Quick news-flash in case you forgot: you can't have profits if you don't have a planet.
By limiting the use of the ESG criteria, DeSantis is sending a dangerous message that Florida does not care about the well-being of its citizens or the environment. This is odd considering that Florida is very vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis, and it has the highest payout ever to the individual U.S. county for disaster relief — over $1 billion for Lee County for damages sustained during Hurricane Ian.
Investments in ESG will not stop hurricanes outright, but ESG investments can lead to climate action that will make them less frequent and powerful.
This proposal by Desantis is not only short-sighted but also completely goes against the global trend toward responsible and sustainable investing. It truly undermines the efforts of those who are working towards a better future for all.
It's been past due for our leaders to start taking climate change seriously because whether we like it or not, the climate crisis is our reality. Governor DeSantis must reverse this proposal immediately and start prioritizing the health and well-being of the planet.
