Day 747: July 26th, 2021. Super News! In a move to curb an ever-growing trend of Asian hate, several U.S. government agencies will now call 'Asian carp' simply 'invasive carp'. While more generalized, the term 'Asian carp' was already a blanket statement referring to four different species of carp: silver, bighead, grass, and black carp. The carp were initially brought to the United States to help keep aquaculture ponds clean, but once they escaped, they wreaked havoc on much of the Mississippi.
.
But this distinction might not be the final common name for the fish. A media campaign hopes to increase consumer interest in eating the fish by rebranding them as 'delicious' and 'wild', not 'invasive' or 'muddy tasting', like common carp are often believed to be. Name changes like 'slimehead' to 'orange roughy' and 'Patagonia toothfish' to 'Chilean sea bass' have worked before, leading marketers to believe that a name change could help drive down their numbers. The name is yet to be announced, but the marketing strategy for getting their numbers under control is well underway.
