The Norfolk Southern Corporation has taken a stance against improving its safety standards, including implementing electronically controlled brakes, and has pushed for the relaxation of federal regulations on transporting toxic petrochemicals. The massive derailment of 50 Norfolk Southern Corporation railcars carrying toxic chemicals is a prime example of what can happen when safety regulations are relaxed and fossil-fuel lobbyists have their way. Investing in safety regulations is a wise investment for any company. It protects employees' lives and well-being, helps businesses maintain their reputations, and reduces long-term costs. Yet, instead of investing in long-term safety standards, the Norfolk Southern Corporation has cut its staff amid safety warnings and went on a $10 billion stock buyback. This current MAN-MADE environmental crisis is mainly due to the Norfolk Southern Corporation's penny-pinching approach to safety measures and their active push to weaken regulations. The spillover of these petrochemicals carried by the Norfolk Southern Corporation has led to the exodus of hundreds of people and caused untold environmental damage.
Shame on the Norfolk Southern Corporation for not advancing its safety regulations and endangering this community. I hope the EPA can produce a comprehensive environmental impact report that will help guide the residents of East Palestine, Ohio, on their (expected) lawsuits against the Norfolk Southern Corporation!
