UK museums unite to combat the climate crisis at first inaugural UK Museum COP

National and regional museums in the UK are coming together to tackle the climate crisis collectively. They're committed to sustainable collection management, raising awareness about climate issues, and engaging audiences. This landmark decision was made during the inaugural UK Museum Cop held at Tate Modern in London.

Leading institutions, like Tate (already in 2016!), have already cut ties with fossil fuel companies in response to environmental concerns. The sector sees itself as having an ethical obligation to address the climate and biodiversity crises, given its role in preserving human history and knowledge. And I couldn't agree more, it's time for museums to take their responsibility.
Museums pledge to use their collections and exhibitions to inspire positive climate action, implement decarbonisation plans, and enhance biodiversity in their green spaces. The UK museums' collective effort underlines the urgent need for action on climate change from all sectors and encourages political and business leaders to step up.
Museum leaders believe they have a unique long-term perspective, which allows them to make meaningful contributions beyond the short-term cycles of politics and economics. Their commitment extends to training and apprenticeships in the sector, ensuring environmental sustainability is integrated into all aspects of museum practice.
Fantastic to see the culture world stepping up in the UK. 👏 Do you know of similar initiatives in your country?

The initiative taken by UK museums to combat the climate crisis is a much-needed step in the right direction. Museums have a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of climate change and inspire action among their visitors. By coming together and collaborating on this issue, they can make a significant impact and contribute to the global effort to address the climate crisis. It is encouraging to see institutions taking responsibility and using their platforms to create positive change.
