Awards €720 Million to Propel Renewable Hydrogen Projects Across Europe

European Commission grants nearly €720 million to seven renewable hydrogen projects across Europe. These projects were chosen through a rigorous competitive bidding process facilitated by the European Hydrogen Bank, with funds sourced from the EU Emissions Trading System. The selected projects will produce renewable hydrogen within Europe, receiving subsidies to offset the cost difference between production expenses and the current market price, which is primarily influenced by non-renewable sources. By supporting these initiatives, the European Hydrogen Bank is advancing the adoption of cleaner fuels, ultimately contributing to the decarbonization of various European industries. The renewable hydrogen generated will find applications in sectors such as steel, chemicals, maritime transport, and fertilizers.
These seven projects emerged as winners from an oversubscribed auction that attracted a total of 132 bids. Together, they aim to produce 1.58 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over a decade, resulting in the avoidance of more than 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Spanning across four European countries, the selected projects submitted bids ranging from €0.37 to €0.48 per kilogram of renewable hydrogen produced, while also meeting all other qualification requirements. The subsidies allocated to these seven projects vary, ranging from €8 million to €245 million.
