WPP’s Sustainable Transformation for a Greener Future

WPP, a global leader in marketing and communications, is taking significant strides towards sustainability by reimagining its workplaces and supply chains. Recognizing the profound impact it has through its work for clients, WPP is committed to setting a standard for sustainable practices across its operations. As part of an ambitious transformation, WPP aims to move 85,000 employees into at least 65 world-class, net-zero campuses by 2025, all powered by renewable energy. This initiative reflects WPP’s dedication to doing what’s right, as emphasized by Rachel Higham, WPP’s Global Chief Information Officer.
A key aspect of WPP’s sustainability efforts is the reduction of physical office space by 20%, aligning with the company’s carbon emission reduction targets set in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. This transformation is not just about reducing space; it’s about creating a more agile, connected, and collaborative network of companies. WPP’s new campuses are designed as “live experiments,” allowing the company to continuously adapt and innovate, ensuring that each building is smart, flexible, and sustainable. The use of Cisco’s technology, including Cisco Meraki MT sensors, plays a crucial role in monitoring environmental factors and optimizing energy use, furthering WPP’s sustainability goals.
WPP’s new campuses are designed to foster creativity and collaboration by providing dynamic workspaces that encourage movement and interaction. With at least half of the space dedicated to shared areas such as cafes, meeting rooms, and lounges, employees from different agencies are encouraged to mingle and collaborate. The design of these spaces is intended to support a healthy way of working, where employees can find environments that suit their needs and inspire fresh perspectives.

WPP’s commitment to sustainability extends to its smart building strategy, where technology is leveraged to create more efficient and sustainable workspaces. Cisco Meraki sensors provide valuable insights into energy usage, allowing WPP to reduce costs and carbon emissions while improving the working environment. This data-driven approach enables WPP to create ideal office conditions, from ‘library-like’ silent areas to bustling collaboration spaces, all while minimizing environmental impact. The results speak for themselves, with significant reductions in energy consumption already achieved at WPP’s London campus, a model that will be replicated globally.
WPP’s new campuses are not just about sustainability; they are about bringing together global talent in innovative ways. The versatile design of these campuses, with features like ‘dancing walls’ and ‘wormholes,’ allows for seamless collaboration between teams, whether they are on-site or working remotely. This flexibility ensures that WPP can quickly adapt spaces for new business pitches or client meetings, fostering a culture of innovation and cross-pollination across its global network. As WPP continues to refine its campus strategy, it remains committed to creating smarter, more sustainable spaces that support its mission of building better futures for its people, planet, clients, and communities.
