A number of sustainable practices by Auroville have contributed to a lower greenhouse gas emissions impact. These include generating renewable electricity through solar photovoltaics (PV) and a wind turbine, and recycling solid waste.
If instead of producing solar power, Auroville had consumed electricity from the grid, it is estimated that an additional 478 tCO2e would have been emitted. Similarly, if Auroville had landfilled waste instead of recycling, the emissions would have increased by 35 tCO2e.
Thus Auroville avoided 513 tCO2e from being released into the atmosphere or 9% of the emission had these measures not been implemented.
