US largest oil and gas conglomerate ExxonMobil urges Trump to desist from leaving Paris agreement again

Trump withdrew from the 2015 Paris Agreement during his first administration, and pledged to do so again during his most recent reelection campaign. Prior to Trump’s first exit from the climate treaty, Exxon urged Trump’s then-nascent White House to reconsider pulling the U.S. out of the agreement to no avail.

Exxon, the largest U.S.-based public oil and gas company by revenue and market cap, applauded President Joe Biden for rejoining the agreement in 2021 and re-affirmed the company’s own commitment to its climate goals.

“We advocate for policy that accounts for security, affordability, reliability and environmental stewardship — not drastic changes that could hinder the progress being made today,” the Exxon spokesperson said Tuesday.

Exxon’s CEO told the Journal in an interview that the business community finds it unhelpful “to have the pendulum swing back and forth as administrations change.”

“I don’t think the stops and starts are the right thing for businesses,” Woods reportedly said. “It is extremely inefficient. It creates a lot of uncertainty.”

In addition to pulling out of the Paris Agreement, Trump has pledged to “unleash U.S. energy dominance” and “drill, baby, drill.”

Trump nominated former House Rep. Lee Zeldin to be the next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, where Zeldin will lead a deregulatory agenda, according to a Monday statement shared by Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump has also pledged to claw back and repeal as much of the clean energy funding in the Inflation Reduction Act — Biden’s landmark climate action legislation — as possible. Further, it looks increasingly likely that Republicans will hold the power of unified government come January.

Exxon has benefited from some of those initiatives and credits, including receiving $331 million from the Department of Energy for a carbon reduction project at a Texas plant.

Outside of receiving direct funding from the Biden administration, the company has also pursued projects more broadly that it hopes will allow it to achieve net-zero status across its scope 1 and scope 2 operations by 2050.

Over the summer, Exxon announced a partnership with industrial gasses and services provider Air Liquide to receive the chemical feedstocks for low-carbon hydrogen production. More recently, the energy giant announced it had signed a deal with the state of Texas for the largest offshore carbon dioxide storage site in the U.S.

Exxon’s caution about the effects of a second U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement comes as a recent analysis by BloombergNEF found that, currently, the pace of the U.S. energy transition is aligned with a global temperature rise of 2.6 degrees Celsius — above the Paris Agreement goal of keeping temperature rise “well below 2 degrees Celsius.” The same analysis found that the U.S. is on track to cut just 22% of its emissions by 2030, less than half of the emissions cuts required to meet the Paris Agreement goal of halving the nation’s emissions — based on a 2005 baseline — by the end of the decade.

It’s very easy to target a politician like Mr Trump, who is trying to keep everything going as it did go for decades, without any major disturbances in the US, making all the energy savvy industrial giants in his country happy and productive for at least the coming 5 years of his presidential turn, but it’s much more difficult to turn around the whole American Way of Living in such a way, that they all become concerned with the future of their country, to begin with, knowing that they would have to experience even bigger natural disasters if they go on living like this, with a sense of general “Apres moi le deluge” feeling, being a big example for many European and Asiatic countries, the people of the US, with their higher educational levels and intelligence, could make a big difference in the ways of living, in the whole highly productive countries, using more than they should use in all kinds of energy sources, without thinking one second what the consequences of their behavior could mean for the future of the planet earth in the coming decades. I don’t believe that Mr Trump lacks enough advisers in all sides of his huge work as a president, also in the humanitarian aspects of his boycotting world wide agreements, trying to do the difficult task of getting a grip on the environmental decay of our world, but what I think is that, he could very difficultly leave his imago of a Real American Citizen, with all its ups and downs, and become a Milieu-Activist who would fight to change the total behavior of American and all other highly industrial citizens of this world, he would certainly not seen as a President who protects his people but someone trying to destroy The American Culture and Way of Life completely, very risky to take step for any such presidents today the day. Maybe a good initiatief could be, as someone like Mr Al Gore to give a week long an eye-opener curses over the subject of Climate Change and its Consequences, only to the Presidents of this world, from all highly rich and productive countries, without any exemptions, including Mr Chi and Mr Trump as well as his listeners, barred completely from leaving the “class rooms” before the end of that week, for any occasion and any time and without any possibility to get in discussions with any of their counterparts. Only listen and learn to become new leaders of a New World Order, respecting not only their own cultural heritage and the daily needs of their citizens but also the needs of their Neighbours, obliged to live on this lonely planet called Earth.

The BloombergNEF analysis is alarming, a 2.6°C global temperature rise isn’t just a number, it’s a warning of escalating climate crises. Exxon’s efforts to meet net-zero goals are commendable, but as one of the largest oil and gas companies, they could push harder for systemic changes in the industry. Instead of merely reacting to policy swings, companies like Exxon have the resources and influence to lead by example. https://incrediboxcolorboxmustard.org

ExxonMobil's urging of former U.S. President Donald Trump to remain in the Paris Agreement highlights the company's recognition of the growing need for climate action and the potential benefits of global cooperation on climate change.

This is a shift from the oil giants who only advocate for actions to allow them to continue with fossils fuels extraction. I wish to believe that Exxon isn't green washing. Currently its hard to trust these giants.

If companies like ExxonMobil can recognize the value in staying engaged, it’s high time everyone else does too.
