Youths at present are suffering from anxiety, fear and helpless anger. Persistent inaction or delayed action of elder generation in dealing with climate change is exposing the dreams and lives of younger ones to serious threats and danger.
In this setting, the first podcast of an intergenerational conversation on climate change challenges among James Cameron and his âgod daughterâ Daisy begins. It is about Fossil vs Fuel.
This first podcast sets the context for diving deep into the human psyche that aspire for excellence of current generation and also for generations to come. The discourse starts between the interviewed and interviewee in a conversation of father-daughter mode, where daughter is worried yet considerate. She has already seen how climate change is aggravating problem of waste disposal or the water crisis in poorer people residing in country like Nepal. She, like many others is searching for the ways to overcome the challenges, which are threatening our very existence. James Cameron joins her journey from a space of affection, confidence and conviction of a winner. He is a pioneer in long fought battles in field of environment, climate change and sustainable development. He is an achiever. He traded in the uncharted territory of legal battles for protection of environmental rights in early days of his career and won these cases at international courts. Judicial activism has always remained a powerful force in bringing balance in earth and her natural environment. He is also a visionary, who with his fellow members advocated for international treaty on climate change since 1988 and which finally took a concrete shape in famous 1992 Rio Conference. UNFCCC (United Framework Convention on Climate Change) was constituted in 1988. James and his friends, whom he fondly remembered as âCambridge mafiasâ were advocating for climate action twenty years before the endorsement by 97% of 10000 climate scientists that climate change is real. The task was not easy.
Father is the greatest hero of his daughter. James Cameron, being a veteran winner in these fields of sustainability, environment and climate change could have spoken in a tone of imposing parent. But he picks up the threads with great humility and by admitting the greatest blunders of people of his generation. Success also like failures teaches us to be humble. It is a no denying fact that more could have been and should have been done for greenhouse gas mitigation. He calls for empathy and action. If someone is living a happy and comfortable life, then it owes to that person to extend support and resources to those who are less fortunate and are more vulnerable to climate risks. He encourages to be positive but not to be complacent or to be over-optimistic. He challenges the very notion of ânot profit makingâ tag because of its inherent negativity and limited financial efficiency. He believes in driving the projects with purpose by using ingenuity, creativity, entrepreneurial ability.
Is it better to call those organization, which are utilizing their revenues for people and planet as âwisely utilizing revenues (wurs)â ? â just a passing thought by this reviewer.
A father figure, who has already won many battles shares his collective experience, which are bound to enlighten the path of his children and their children. It is his giving back to future. The gifts are wisdom, insight, enthusiasm and love.
This intergenerational conversation is pivoted in this point of exchange where do-ers of yester years are ready to unconditionally love and support the do-ers of today and tomorrow for winning this race of humanity, when the fear of extinction of species are looming at large. The change of baton is inevitable but the thriving for life shall continue.
It is clear that the upcoming podcasts are going to search for âwhat aboutâ questions, which are bothering us.
The first question to be dealt in this series is what about the fossil fuels. History of energy transition indicates that our dependence on coal or gas-based power generation is only of hundred plus years. The first coal-based power started its operation in January 1882. It took much longer for coal fired grid based electricity to cover major parts of world. Electricity is still not available to few pockets of the world. The history of human civilization reminds us how discovery of fire separated sapiens from all other species. It is not about decoupling the development from fire or core-energy. It is just taking recourse to cleaner energy generation, which is not based on fossil fuels. Can this line of thought help to overcome the mental barriers â again a thought by this reviewer.
James Cameron is also a co-founder of climate asset management company way back in 2002-03. Ways for moving the money for climate appears to be easier when it is searched with the vigor and strength of the youth and the wisdom and experience of the seniors together.
We shall eagerly wait to be part for this father-daughter conversation in search of a happy and sustainable future.
