Volvo Truck: Are truck manufacturers playing a double game when it comes to climate protection?

The climate think tank InfluenceMap accuses truck manufacturers of lobbying against stricter climate protection regulations for the industry. InfluenceMap specifically targets the Volvo Group.

This opposes ambitious climate regulations in both the US and the EU, although it claims to engage in policies in line with the Paris climate agreement. In the U.S., the Volvo Group lobbied lawmakers directly in several U.S. states as part of a coordinated campaign by the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) against California-led ACT (Advanced Clean Truck) regulation, according to one of the allegations. ACT mandates an increasing percentage of zero-emission vehicles for medium and heavy-duty vehicles.

In the EU, the Volvo Group uses its influence as part of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) to lobby against stricter climate protection requirements - specifically to prevent a complete phase-out of combustion engines by 2040. In fact, as reported, the EU Commission is proposing a CO₂ reduction target of 90 percent for heavy commercial vehicles in 2040, although it originally considered 100 percent CO₂ reduction.

In 2021, InfluenceMap had already accused the German auto industry of playing a double game in climate protection.
