This new energy storage facility can heat a cold Swedish city for two weeks

A former oil storage cavern in Västerås, Sweden, is now being turned into an energy storage facility. The 300,000 cubic meter cavern can store 13 GWh of district heating, allowing for increased electricity production without needing a new power plant.
The cavern acts like a giant thermos for district heating, storing enough energy to supply the city of Västerås with heat for up to two weeks, depending on the outside temperature.
The power plant, run by the municipally-owned  energy company Mälarenergi, produces both district heating and electricity. During summer, the need for heating is low, resulting in excess heat that has been wasted until now. With the new energy storage, this surplus can be stored for use during colder days, ensuring consistent electricity production even in winter. This buffer allows for continued high electricity production even in cold weather, making the energy supply more reliable and predictable.

Lovely! I hope the energy stored in this facility will be renewable, harnessing surplus heat from renewable sources during summer. This approach ensures sustainable energy use, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and supports a cleaner, more resilient energy system for Västerås.
