Computer chip energy efficiency could cut data center electricity use.

Oregon State University and Baylor University researchers have reduced photonic chip energy usage in data centers and supercomputers.

John Conley of the OSU College of Engineering, former Oregon State colleague Alan Wang, now of Baylor, and OSU graduate students Wei-Che Hsu, Ben Kupp, and Nabila Nujhat developed a new, ultra-energy-efficient approach to correct for temperature changes that destroy photonic devices. Conley said such devices "will form the high-speed communication backbone of future data centers and supercomputers."
Instead of electrons, photonic devices employ photons for circuitry. Photons provide fast, energy-efficient data transmission.
Photonic chips' temperature stability and performance have required a lot of energy until now. However, Wang's team has shown that temperature control energy can be reduced by more than 1 million.
Conley added, "Alan is an expert in photonic materials and devices and my area of expertise is atomic layer deposition and electronic devices." β€œWe were able to make working prototypes that show temperature can be controlled via gate voltage, using virtually no electric current.”
Wang stated the photonics industry exclusively uses "thermal heaters" to fine tune the working wavelengths of high-speed, electro-optic devices and improve their performance. Each thermal heater uses many milliwatts of power.
