2,978 planes flew on April day, aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted, "The skyrocketing domestic passenger traffic post Covid is a reflection of India's high growth."Since the pandemic, the country's economy has boomed, attracting more tourists. 37.5 million people flew domestically in the first three months of 2023.The Directorate General of Civil Aviation reports a 51.7% rise from last year. Covid halted progress for two years. Aviation expert Mark Martin told the BBC that demand "has been building for some time and it seems to be exploding right now." Mr. Martin says many people have taken their first travel since the outbreak began.
The irony about this is that India is one of the countries which is adversely affected by effects of climate change. It would be expected to see the government encouraging people to transition to eco-friendly mobility as a way to remedy effects of climate change. Instead, it is celebrating increased domestic flights which are a catalyst to global warming.
Air India, IndiGo: New record as 4.56m Indians take flights in a day
The milestone was reached on 30 April as 2,978 flights took off across the country.

Indian government should consider investing in alternative modes of transport and most importantly those that use green energy. This revelation is really disturbing.

India's population is high and the country would greatly profit from renewable energy means of transport like electric trains. Let them look at such ideas to solve this crisis
