I will be speaking at Nature in the Race to Zero on Earth Day April 2022. Like all other speakers at the event, I have been asked to formulate a reply to the following question: “Decarbonizing our economies is a huge - and hugely important - challenge, deeply affecting all parts of our societies. What is the significance of mankind’s relationship with nature and the role of nature-based solutions in this transformation?” Here is my reply: The purpose of decarbonizing our economies is to protect nature, which means protecting humanity - for existing and future generations. Humanity's biggest mistake was to turn our back on nature. It is important that we find our way back since we are part of nature. Protecting and restoring nature is our best insurance to protect the climate while decarbonizing our economies. It holds the potential to store massive amounts of carbon in forests, soil, the biosphere, and oceans if we treat it well. At the same time, we will be protecting biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience, and human health. Join me on Earth Day, register now: https://www.wedonthavetime.org/events/nature
