You have maybe spotted Ayisha Siddiqa during one of the We Don't Have Time broadcasts, at COP27 for example. Well, the Pakistani climate activist and poet has made it to the Time Women of the Year 2023 list. Ayisha Siddiqa is a strong voice in the fight against climate change. At just 24 years old, she has already made a significant impact as a human rights and climate defender. Her passion for poetry and art as a means of protest and hope has captivated audiences all over the world and brought humanity back into the staid, high-level conversations that increasingly occupy her time.
Ayisha Siddiqa grew up in a matriarchal, tribal community in eastern Pakistan and was deeply influenced by her surroundings. She witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of pollution on her community's health and well-being, including the illness and death of her grandparents caused by polluted river water. At the age of 16, she became aware of the link between human rights and climate change, and since then has been dedicated to defending life and the rights of women through climate action.
In 2020, Ayisha co-founded Polluters Out, a global youth activist coalition, and helped launch the Fossil Free University, an activism training course. She is also a research fellow for the Climate Litigation Accelerator project at New York University's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice and aims to create a system of support that breaks down silos between intergovernmental leaders and local activists. Ayisha is a true inspiration and a vital voice in the global fight against climate change. Let's send her climate love on International Women's Day.
