As US ramps up nuclear power, fuel supplier Centrus Energy plans to enrich more uranium domestically

Centrus Energy’s commitment to expanding domestic uranium enrichment is a powerful step forward for America’s energy independence and the global fight against climate change. By investing $60 million in its Oak Ridge, Tennessee facility to manufacture high-tech centrifuges for uranium enrichment, Centrus is addressing a critical need for secure and sustainable nuclear fuel. This effort not only reduces reliance on foreign uranium sources but also fortifies the backbone of America’s clean energy grid.

Nuclear energy, which produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, plays an indispensable role in reducing fossil fuel dependence and combating air pollution. As the Biden administration aims to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050, initiatives like Centrus’ expansion align perfectly with this vision, supporting the development of both traditional and advanced nuclear reactors, including small modular reactors. These advancements promise to bring clean, reliable energy to millions of homes, significantly contributing to the decarbonization of the U.S. energy sector.

By collaborating with institutions like Oak Ridge National Laboratory and tapping into federal investments, Centrus Energy is driving innovation while creating hundreds of high-quality jobs, ensuring a robust future for the nuclear workforce. This initiative showcases the potential of nuclear energy not only as a stabilizer of the energy grid but as a key partner to renewables, forming a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.

Centrus Energy’s leadership exemplifies the bold actions necessary to address the dual challenges of energy security and climate change. Their efforts are a testament to how public-private collaboration can fuel progress, safeguard the environment, and accelerate the transition to a cleaner energy future.
