Indonesia delays $20bn green plan

Indonesia has postponed the launch of its $20 billion clean energy plan due to challenges in aligning financing terms and addressing concerns about new coal plants with wealthy donor nations. The plan is intended to outline how foreign investment will support Indonesia's transition away from coal dependence. However, negotiations on the plan's international aspects have encountered difficulties, as Indonesia seeks more favorable financial terms from affluent countries.
Originally slated for release, the Just Energy Transition Partnership (Jetp) document will now be revealed later in the year. This delay is attributed to the need for further time to develop a technically credible approach, according to the Jetp Secretariat, which coordinates between Indonesia and donor countries. The partnership, formed between Indonesia and international partners led by the US and Japan, aims to curtail Indonesia's power sector emissions by 2030, advance its net-zero target to 2050, and expedite the adoption of renewable energy to constitute at least 34% of total power generation by 2030. However, disagreements over funding types and complexities associated with shifting from coal to renewables have hindered progress in these negotiations. As Indonesia is heavily reliant on coal for nearly half of its electricity production and witnessed a surge in coal consumption in 2022 while renewable energy's share slightly declined, the financial support pledged by developed nations seeks to reverse this trend.

It is unfortunate that most of the plans and pledges that some countries give, are never implemented and fulfilled.
