New Zealand to Ban PFAS in Cosmetics by 2027

New Zealand is poised to be among the global pioneers in banning per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in cosmetic products, intending to outlaw these enduring chemicals by the close of 2026. PFAS, commonly found in cosmetics like mascara, nail polish, and shaving cream for their spreading and water-resistant properties, have earned the moniker "forever chemicals" due to their protracted decomposition, taking hundreds of years to break down fully.
According to PFAS Free, a project by the environmental charity group Fidra, specific PFAS varieties can take over 1,000 years to decompose. PFAS infiltrate, disseminate, and accumulate both in the environment and human bodies, raising concerns about potential impacts on wildlife, ecosystems, and human health. Recent studies, including one published in 2023, have linked PFAS exposure to heightened risks of various cancers, such as ovarian, breast, and prostate cancers. PFAS have also been detected in human blood and breast milk.

Great move by New Zealand having laws that regulate activities that would otherwise be harmful to climate
