🌍 *GOING GREEN* Going green does not only involve planting trees .It involves much more. Basically, Going Green means to live life, as an individual as well as a community, in a way that is friendly to the natural environmental and is sustainable for the earth. It means contributing towards maintaining the natural ecological balance in the environment and preserving the planet and its natural systems and resources. It also means taking steps, whether big or small, to minimize the harm you do to the environment, as a result of inhabiting this planet. In practice, going green means adopting five basic principles in your daily life: 🌱protecting our biodiversity and ecosystems, 🌱 reducing air, water and soil pollution, 🌱 Energy conservation 🌱 improving waste management, 🌱 ensuring the sustainability of our blue economy and fisheries sectors. _SYNOPSIS OF SOME_ _PRINCIPLES OF GOING GREEN_ ✅ *IMPROVING WASTE* *MANAGEMENT* . 💡REFUSE - This is the first critical choice in reducing plastic waste. Simply by choosing to refuse single-use items and opting for plastic free alternatives and reusables, reduces waste of all kinds. 💡REDUCE - Before making a purchase, ask yourself if it’s truly needed or if another item can be used instead. Choosing to shop for secondhand items helps reduce new product consumption and contributes to less waste. 💡REUSE - Many households simply reuse or repurpose what’s already on hand. Items like food containers, clothing, bags, toys, art supplies, tools, sporting goods, and more. Consider reusing items as much as possible or take them to a secondhand store, so they don’t end up in landfill. 💡RECYCLE - Once an item has reached the end of its life, recycling correctly helps reduce plastic ending up in landfill or as litter. When buying new items, consider choosing recycled products . ✅ *ENERGY CONSERVATION* This are ways we should delve into to conserve energy . Harnessing use of renewable Energy is key .Here are types of Renewable energy; 1️⃣ Solar Energy: 🌞 Solar energy is one of the most prevalent forms of renewable energy worldwide. It utilizes sunlight to generate electricity, heat, and hot water for homes and businesses. The beauty of solar energy lies in its ability to produce power without emitting harmful pollutants, contributing to climate change mitigation. 2️⃣ Wind Energy: 💨 Harnessing the power of the wind, wind energy is an effective solution, especially in areas with strong and consistent winds. Wind turbines generate electricity, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and offering a fascinating option for remote regions. 3️⃣ Hydropower Energy: 💧 Hydropower energy harnesses the force of flowing water to generate electricity. These hydroelectric facilities can be located on rivers or large bodies of water, making a significant contribution to providing clean and sustainable energy. Not only does hydropower reduce emissions, but it also helps control floods and provides water for irrigation. 4️⃣ Biomass Energy: 🍃 Biomass energy is derived from organic sources like crops, organic waste, and grass clippings. This involves using biomass to produce biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, replacing fossil fuels and decreasing emissions. 5️⃣ Geothermal Energy: 🔥 Geothermal energy utilizes the Earth's heat to generate electricity. This often occurs in regions with geothermal activity, like volcanoes or areas with high temperatures beneath the Earth's surface. Geothermal energy is a promising renewable energy source that emits no greenhouse gases and has minimal environmental impact. 6️⃣ Tidal Energy: 🌊 Tidal energy is harnessed from the natural rise and fall of tides caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun. Tidal power plants use this movement of water to generate electricity. We have numerous options to tap into these commendable Renewable Energy sources. ✅ *POLLUTION* pollution can be categorized into two main areas: ✅air pollution, ✅water pollution. ✍️Air pollution poses a significant threat to our health and the environment. We must make a conscious effort to reduce air pollution by minimizing the use of fossil fuels, such as coal and petrol. Encouraging the use of public transportation, carpooling, and cycling can help reduce vehicular emissions. Additionally, planting trees and supporting initiatives that promote green energy sources like solar and wind power can contribute to cleaner air. ✍️ water pollution affects aquatic ecosystems and our water resources. We should be mindful of the substances we release into water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. Proper disposal of waste and chemicals, as well as avoiding the use of excessive fertilizers and pesticides, can prevent water pollution. Participating in clean-up drives near water bodies and raising awareness about the importance of clean water are also vital responsibilities. All these principles are important in protecting the environment from harm, as well as helping to ensure that living (for humans and other creatures) on earth is sustainable. So, in your daily life, do adopt green practices under all principles, to make a difference. #Green is a Trend! By Kate Kirui Founder Green circle foundation.
