The European Parliament has approved a law confirming a full phase-out of CO2 generating cars by 2035, with a first step of 55% reduction in CO2 generation from cars needing to happen before 2030. The law is expected to significantly reduce the price of electric cars for consumers overall. Car manufacturers such as Volkswagen have already announced they will switch their European production to focus only on electric cars before the due date. Electric cars should be promoted alongside better common transportation as the demand for rare ressources for the batteries will put pressures again on planetary boundaries..

@jeanne_benard what ressources for batteries are rare?
•

@jeanne_benard the main issue with cars have always been the 60%steel and 40% fossil plastics that add up to about 2t. Some 10 kilos of Li, Co, Mn, Ni are not the real issue.

@andreas_kohler well the demand of lithium for batteries is an element that should be well integrated within such policies. I support the transition toward electric cars as long as recycling and ‘safe’ mining measures are implemented. The International Energy Agency say that the world could expect a lithium shortage by 2025. And the South America ( Bolivia, Argentina, Chile) have approximately half of the world lithium resources. The extraction of lithium there should be carefully done as the water is scarce in those places. As we have witnessed with the deforestation of the Amazon, the current political landscape behind mining practices should be strengthened to prevent further damages. Thus the transition to electric vehicles should be further complemented by common transport infrastructures since individual electric vehicles, alone, will put strong pressure on the environment once again.

@andreas_kohler lithium. Most reserves controlled by China.
