Sustainability work within the Church of Sweden in Örebro

OPENART highligts Svenska kyrkan (Church of Sweden), one of our partners during 2024-2025
The Church of Sweden views the earth and the creation as a gift to be shared with future generations. Caring for the earth needs to be translated into action. In the Church of Sweden we work every day, in all aspects of our operations, to reduce our negative impact on the environment. By being a partner in OpenArt, we want to highlight the issue of sustainability and at the same time spread hope.

In February 2022, the Church Council decided that the parishes should be certified according to phase 1 of the Church of Sweden's standard for environmental management systems. Certification is a testament to the fact that we have laid the foundation for long-term sustainability work.
We are far from finished. Our vision is to not leave a larger ecological footprint with our operations than what is fair from a global perspective. Many small and large steps need to be taken for us to get there, and environmental work should permeate our entire organization and all our activities.

Within the church, we have eight environmental goal areas, each with an environmental goal and associated sub-goals. We go through the environmental goals each year and identify measures that contribute to achieving the goals. Examples of activities undertaken in 2023 include the installation of new charging stations for electric cars, replacing fossil vehicles with electric cars, congregations hosting musicals and concerts about environmental and climate issues and replacing annual flowers with perennials. Our congregations work to make their purchases more sustainable.
We have a lot left to do, but we see a great commitment among congregation members, employees, and our elected officials. We will continue our journey together to contribute to a sustainable Örebro.

Örebro city is lucky to have a partner walking together in the journey that contributes to sustainability. Indeed churches worldwide can play a big role in caring for our mother earth now and in future,if all can embrace such as these steps already taken by the church of Sweden.
