IEC-GIF Launches Ground breaking e-waste project in Kenya

A new initiative called "Turning Battery E-Waste into E-Resources" has been launched by the International Electrotechnical Commission Global Impact Fund (IEC-GIF) in Kenya. The project aims to improve the management of battery e-waste by supporting Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) over two years with an initial funding of Sh58 million. By recycling battery e-waste, they can get valuable stuff back and help the environment. This means they won't need to keep digging up the earth for materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium, which are used in batteries. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (KNCIEC) are excited about this project. They believe it's a big step forward for Kenya and Africa. Esther Ngari, the Managing Director of KEBS, says it's an honor to be part of it. She thinks this project will set an example for other countries. Battery recycling is essential because making new batteries requires digging up the earth. This harms the environment. By recycling, we can reduce this harm. Kenya being chosen for this project is a big deal. It's not just about the money; it's about showing a way to help the environment in the long term. The IEC-GIF and local partners want to make a plan for sustainable development. They hope other countries in Africa will copy their plan. Matthew Doherty, a senior advisor, says it's an honor to work with Kenya on this project. He hopes it will start a bigger movement for sustainability and innovation in Africa. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/realtime/2024-02-27-initiative-to-boost-battery-e-waste-management-launched/

@Kevin yes, especially when you visit certain car yards in Kenya and see the scale of Electric Vehicles dumped because of batteries becoming obsolete, you really appreciate this project. Such batteries will be recycled and where possible, restored leading to more EVs on our roads
